Northern Nevada Digital Publication
Objectives: The Northern Nevada Health System sought to modernize its traditional print health news magazine by transitioning to a digital format. This pilot project aimed to create an engaging and interactive online platform to attract a broader audience and improve user engagement with health content.
Role: UX Designer, Developer, Interaction Designer
Duration: 4 Months
There was no existing research or information architecture for this venture, with it being a learning experience with a new tool and a pilot project, our team started with the very bare basics in creating the information architecture for this project.

Research & Discovery

Working with the existing brand guidelines, I chose a color palette and photography style that reflected the professional and trustworthy image of the Northern Nevada Health System. The goal was to maintain a cohesive visual identity while enhancing the digital experience.

This project did not take the traditional route. With the time constraint as well as the task of learning a completely new platform and software we had to combine usually occurring steps in the design process since developing would be happening at the same time. Step one was diving into learning the process, the best way to do this was to get our hands dirty with a project and jumping in feet first. I also used the inspiration given freely by Ceros and broke down the components I liked and learned to piece them together. I simultaneously worked in both figma and Ceros and had to juggle both platforms since no integration existed at the time between the platforms.

Research & Discovery

Since I started with a component based layout re-imagining the design to work for mobile was not too difficult. A lot of the imagery and sections went from being horizontal to stacked vertically. The most important portion is making sure things were scaled down to the right sizing and continued to be accessible. Scaling down the design from desktop to mobile was actually really simple with how ceros had it set up, it was a simple matter of just scaling the sizing down and stacking everything.

Wireframes
Design
The high fidelity wireframes were a quick work due to the easy access of building out a component library in Figma first. I created basic layouts and tried to encompass the look and feel in Figma before transferring it into Ceros. Some components that are missing in the Figma layouts is due to Ceros compatibility issues so I just created those from scratch in the Ceros platform.

The pilot digital magazine successfully transitioned from print to an engaging, interactive digital platform, despite tight timelines and limited integration tools. The intuitive design and interactive features led to positive user feedback, even with minimal research data. This project resulted in a 20% faster turnaround rate and saved millions in production, development, and resources. The challenges highlighted the need for better processes and integration, offering valuable lessons for future cross-functional projects. The design earned two awards from GDUSA and The Communicator Awards in 2023.
